East 12th Street Bridge

Travis County

Waller Creek , Austin, Texas

History

The Waller Creek Bridge, just east of the State Capitol in Austin, was constructed in 1931as part of the city's five year beautification program. Under the program, East Twelfth Street, a primary artery to the State Capitol, was turned into a wide divided boulevard. To span Waller Creek, city engineer Carl Levander created a graceful twin structure featuring long curved concrete girders supported on reinforced concrete column piers. The design of the bridge was further enhanced with decorative open balustrade railing and a pebbled textured surface given to the outside girders.
